Thanks to the great attention paid by leaders at different levels and the joint efforts made by educational workers in Hefei, Deng Xiaoping Theory has been upheld, Party’s educational policies have been implemented, reforms deepened and remarkable achievements made in different kinds of educational fields. The gratifying results made in the nine-year compulsory education and illiteracy elimination among the young and middle-aged have been carried forward. Great progress has been made in senior secondary education. Vocational and adult training for skill acknowledgement, secondary and elementary education are continuing to develop healthily in Hefei.

 By the end of 2006, there were totally in Hefei 37 institutions of higher learning with an enrollment of 89,500 students for the year. The student population was 272,900. Hefei CAS Branch and other institutions of higher leaning enrolled 7,726 PhD candidates and postgraduates in 2006, a rise of 781 over 2005. The population of doctoral students and postgraduates was 19,892, 2400 up over the previous year. There were 23 secondary technical schools with 74,400 students, 49 vocational schools with 70,300 students. There were also 270 secondary schools with 302,900 students, 915 elementary schools with 370,300 students. 98.8percent of secondary-school-age children were in school and 99.9 percent of elementary-school-age children were in school, too. The population of adult students at secondary technical schools was 10,700.
